Traditionally, liberals are for expansive government and conservatives are for constraining the government (especially Federal) and leaving power to either local government or individuals.

That doesn’t hold as much anymore as partisan affiliation has become the overwhelming identity in American politics.

I think the reality is that because of Partisan politics, it is hard to ignore party affiliation and how its dynamics affect decision making. That is why we need to reform American institutions to better account for this polarization.
